About Me
I’m a passionate aviator, flight club member, and cockpit builder with a strong focus on practical, scenario-based training through simulation.
As an instrument-rated commercial pilot and certified flight instructor, I offer over five years of professional experience in software engineering and support, specializing in general aviation. My technical background includes developing electronic E6Bs, simulator avionics, and contributing to the ForeFlight EFB codebase.
High-quality flight simulation, when used correctly, can significantly improve procedures, avionics proficiency, and overall airmanship—leading to greater confidence and safer decision-making on the flight deck. Throughout every stage of my training, I’ve used X-Plane across a variety of aircraft and avionics configurations, including:
• Van’s RV-12 (Dynon SkyView, Garmin G3X)
• Cirrus SR20 (Avidyne PFD/MFD, IFD 550)
• Cessna 172 Skyhawk (land & sea; steam gauges, G5, GTN 650, GFC 500/550)
• Piper Cherokee Warrior (G5, GTN 650, GI 275)
• Grumman Tiger (GI 275, GTN 650)
I’ve also operated BATD simulators using commercial versions of X-Plane 10 and built multiple personal simulation setups for X-Plane 11 and 12. These systems incorporate custom plugins alongside tools such as Air Manager, RealityXP, xPilot (VATSIM), X-Camera, FlyWithLua, and LiveTraffic, supported by hardware from VKB, Logitech, Octavi, and Thrustmaster.
I enjoy helping other pilots learn, improve, and get comfortable with the tools and procedures that make flying safer and more enjoyable—and I’m always happy to help and talk aviation, anything from avionics workflows to seaplane operations.

“Kalen was simply excellent. I am a junior pilot, currently working on my IFR rating. I’m using my simulator to facilitate my training and to provide a platform where I can learn and hone the fundamentals of IFR flying before applying them in the live cockpit. Recognizing that no simulator is going to truly replicate the feel and response of a real aircraft, Kalen helped to create a much more functional simulator environment. His fund of knowledge clearly stretches far beyond what we had time to cover in our 90 minute session. He tailored his time to fit my immediate needs. I have struggled with getting my simulator up to a functional level, and he rapidly fine tuned a few things and directed me to some different components which have made the system far more useful. I now have system which will truly make every minute in the simulator worth the cost. I look forward to working further with Kalen focusing on actual IFR training in the simulator.”
“I was very pleased with the work Kalen Willits completed on my simulator. In addition to setting up existing off-the-shelf products, Kalen also searched the market for additional features that transformed my home C-172 simulator into a remarkably accurate representation of the Cessna T207A that we regularly fly. This included fine details such as Garmin instrument integration, power management, NAV/COM specifications, and the handling characteristics and idiosyncrasies of the aircraft itself. I would highly recommend Kalen’s work to dedicated professionals who use home simulators for uncertified training on complex aircraft.”
“Even though I managed to get most of the hardware for my Flight Sim plugged in correctly on my own, I’m a novice with X-Plane, so I was daunted by the thought of trying to configure everything to make it usable for training purposes. During our 1.5 hr session, Kalen was extremely patient, helpful and kind resolving my initial tech issues and throughout the session. Once he got logged into my system, he efficiently checked controller connections and configured everything in X-Plane for me so I could finally start training with it. There’s no way I could have set up my system in so short a time without Kalen’s help. If I run into trouble in the future, I won’t hesitate to schedule another session with him to work through any new technical or software problems that might arise. Thanks for your help!”
“Kalen did a very nice job of setting up meeting and working with me. He did the things I asked and was very helpful with my questions. Planning on doing more with him as I get this farther along.”
