Note: If you are not already comfortable using Discord, or if you have a more complex simulator setup with multiple monitors or external panels, we highly recommend setting up a brief orientation call before the session to check your audio and screen sharing by emailing

  1. If you don’t already have a Discord account, download Discord and make a new account.
  2. Use this link to submit your Discord username so we can provide access to the private SimGym channel.
  3. At the start of the event, open the Flight Sim Coach Discord server and join the “Small Group Event / Voice and Screen Share” channel. If you don’t see this, please call Mike at 401-440-6845.

    You can then share your screen with the instructor by pressing the “Screen” button in the lower-left of the Discord window, then selecting your flight simulator application or the entire screen. 

You’re encouraged to complete any pre-flight planning prior to the start of the instructor session and then ask questions once the instructor is online.

We recommend using PTT-only mode in Discord. If you’re not using PTT mode, you can also easily mute/unmute yourself using the keyboard shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+M

If you don’t want to hear the chatter between the instructor and other clients, use the “deafen mode” in Discord. The keyboard shortcut is CTRL+SHIFT+D.

Note that these keyboard shortcuts may not work when Discord is not the active window. You can use ALT+TAB to cycle between your simulator and Discord to toggle mute/deafen.

Alternatively, some users have success with assigning a new keybind to the mute/deafen commands in Discord, or running Discord in the administrator mode.

Even if you have just started your student pilot or flight sim journey, we want you to feel welcome to complete these missions at your own pace!

There is no obligation to set any of the failure conditions or research some of the more advanced questions often included in these scenarios.

You’re welcome to simply have fun with these routes and focus on the basics – flying the airplane from point A to B!

Our instructors will still be happy to provide basic guidance during the group session to help answer your questions, no matter what your experience level.

General Considerations and Preflight Review

  • You are starting a long cross-country flight, but when you pre-flighted the plane, you noticed you didn’t have enough fuel, and the fuel truck along with the fuel farm at Olympia is broken. You decide to fly to Bremerton National to get more fuel, but you only have the bare minimum to get there.

  • Weight and loading: 2 Passengers (Weights 195, 200), 100 lbs of cargo. Set fuel required for the minimum required to get to Bremerton.
  • What is the meaning of minimum fuel and emergency fuel? (Suggested reading)
  • Suggested Reading/References: PHAK Chapter 15, SEA Terminal Area Chart (TAC)

For VFR Flights

  • Set clouds to 10,000’ if real-world weather is IMC.
  • Since we have a decent amount of bags, can we place the bags in a specific area/way to have a faster groundspeed to help with our flight? Pros vs. cons of that?

For IFR Flights

  • If real-world weather is VMC or near/below minimums for the ILS, make the weather 900’ and 1 1/2 miles with stratus clouds.
  • Since this flight is short, make the wind layer a consistent 180@10
  • For fuel, takeoff with 35 min + alternate + reserve (basically the minimum required for IFR. It’s very rare you’ll ever have the bare minimum during instrument procedures)
    • If you did takeoff with the bare minimum, how/when would you decide to go to your alternate if you had to go missed?
  • This ILS has many notes; make sure you read and understand all of them.
  • On the ILS runway 20 approach plate, what is the little x with “CFFWM” next to it?
